Dr. Fiona Hurley

Dr Fiona Hurley is an Assistant Professor in Children’s Nursing at the School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health, Dublin City University. She is a Registered General Nurse, Registered Children's Nurse and Registered Nurse Tutor with extensive experience across clinical practice, nursing education and research.

Fiona's research focuses on improving the care and wellbeing of children and families living with complex healthcare needs, including children living with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. 

Fiona completed her PhD at Dublin City University in 2020. Her PhD study explored the experiences of caring for children with non-malignant life-limiting conditions on the island of Ireland (both north and south). The PhD was funded through the All-Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC) and the Health Research Board (HRB). A concurrent mixed-methods design was adopted.

Prior to commencing her current position, Fiona worked as a postdoctoral researcher on the all-island CO-DECIDE study: Co-production of a decision-making framework for planning the place of end-of-life care for children, young people and their families on the island of Ireland. Her research interests span child health, complex care and nursing research. Fiona has continued to develop a strong research profile across child health, nursing and healthcare research. She has expertise in evidence synthesis, mixed-methods research and collaborative approaches to knowledge generation, contributing to research that informs policy, practice and education to improve outcomes for children, families and healthcare professionals.

Fiona regularly acts as a peer reviewer in her area of expertise and interest.
