Dr. Muhammad Mubasher Saleem

Dr Mubasher Saleem received his PhD in Mechanics from Politecnico di Torino, Italy, where his doctoral research on the mechanical design, experimental characterisation and reliability of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) received the Quality Thesis Award. His academic background across Electrical (BE), Electronic (MS) and Mechanical engineering (PhD) has shaped his interdisciplinary research in MEMS, mechatronics, robotics and intelligent sensing technologies.

Before joining Dublin City University (DCU), he held academic and research appointments at Maynooth International Engineering College (MIEC), Maynooth University, Ireland, with teaching responsibilities at Fuzhou University, China; the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), Portugal; the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan; and GIK Institute, Pakistan.

His research lies at the intersection of mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, MEMS and intelligent sensing technologies. His work covers the design, modelling and mechanical reliability of microsystems, with particular interests in MEMS inertial sensors, coupled resonators, mode-localisation sensing, and tactile and force sensing for robotics and smart surgical systems. His experience in inertial sensing includes research at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), where he worked on multifunctional MEMS accelerometers for automotive and acoustic applications in collaboration with Robert Bosch GmbH, and tunable low-g MEMS inertial switches for energy-efficient IoT systems. Building on his work with resonant microsystems, his research also investigates nonlinear mechanical dynamics and physical reservoir computing for energy-efficient sensing and information processing. His interests in robotics extend to sensing-enabled manipulation, autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs), robotic palpation, smart surgical tools and safe human–robot interaction, with applications in industrial automation, biomedical engineering and surgical technologies.

Dr Saleem has held academic leadership positions in mechatronics engineering, including Associate Head of Department and Head of Postgraduate Studies at NUST, where he also contributed to establishing research facilities in MEMS and micro/nano robotic technologies. He has supervised and co-supervised PhD and MS students working on MEMS sensors and actuators, mechatronics, robotics, biomedical sensing and related engineering applications. His research contributions include over 80 peer-reviewed publications, approximately €1 million in research funding secured as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator, and patented microsystem technologies licensed to industry. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.
