Dr. James Byrne
Dr James Byrne joined DCU Business School in 2013 and is a former Discipline Lead in Operations & Supply Chain Management. He previously directed the MSc in Management of Operations and co-developed the MSc and Graduate Certificate in Business (Operations & Supply Chain Management), with the MSc currently ranked among the top 40 globally in the QS Masters in Supply Chain Management rankings. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA).
Prior to joining DCU, James worked as a Senior Scientist with SAP Research and, before this, as a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Limerick. His research focuses on operations, sustainability, analytics and the application of technology and quantitative methods to complex operational and supply chain challenges. It crosses management science, operations and supply chain management, computing and analytics, sustainable and humanitarian supply chains, and simulation, with particular emphasis on decision support, process improvement, resilience, and the design of more effective and sustainable systems.
Research Interests
My research interests span operations research, management science and operations and supply chain management, with a particular focus on how theory, analytical methods and emerging technologies can be combined to understand and improve complex organisational systems. My work includes advanced simulation, prescriptive analytics and AI, alongside research on decision-making, process improvement, resilience, sustainability, humanitarian logistics and supply chain strategy. Methodologically, I am particularly interested in discrete-event, agent-based and system dynamics modelling, and in using empirical and computational approaches to develop and test theory in complex operational settings.
Teaching Interests
My teaching interests include operations and supply chain management, management science, simulation and analytics, AI-enabled decision-making, process improvement, and authentic, practice-based assessment. I am particularly interested in using digital tools to strengthen problem-solving, professional judgement and applied learning.
