Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez

Dr. Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez

Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez, PhD, SFHEA, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies at Dublin City University. She holds a European PhD in Translation in Language Education from the University of Valladolid (Spain), where she also completed a BA in Translation and Interpreting and an MPhil in Translation and Intercultural Communication.

Lucía is Director of the DCU Centre for Translation and Textual Studies (CTTS), a research centre advancing scholarship on communication and translation in crisis contexts, AI and machine translation in the workplace, legal and healthcare interpreting, accessibility, and literary and textual studies. She previously served as Co-Editor of Teanga: The Journal of the Irish Association for Applied Linguistics (2020–2023) and as President of APTIS (the Association of Programmes in Translation and Interpreting Studies, UK and Ireland) (2021–2024). She has been Chair Person of the BA in Applied language and Translation Studies, Director of External Engagement for SALIS, serves as an external examiner at universities across the UK and Ireland and collaborates extensively with national and international partners across research, education, and industry.

She welcomes expressions of interest from prospective PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in translation and language education, multilingualism, audiovisual translation and media accessibility, minority and minoritised languages, and translation, conflict, and memory.

Research Interests

Lucía's research lies at the intersection of Translation Studies and Language Education, with a particular focus on the pedagogical use of translation in language learning and on developing translation as a core competence for language learners. She also investigates the integration of accessibility and audiovisual translation into language teaching and learning. Her interdisciplinary approach draws on Translation Studies, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Studies, and Didactic Audiovisual Translation.

Her current research centres on audiovisual translation and media accessibility, particularly audio description (AD). She examines how evidence-based strategies and collaborative approaches can address challenges related to AD provision, professionalisation, training, and integration within the media and cultural sectors, with a particular focus on Ireland and the wider European context. Supported by an Irish Research Council-funded project (2023–2025), this research positions accessibility as both a professional imperative and a matter of social justice.

Lucía also explores the intersection of translation and memory studies, focusing on cultural artefacts relating to the Spanish Civil War, Franco's dictatorship, and Spain's post-dictatorship period. Her research examines how translation mediates processes of collective memory, positions translators as agents and custodians of remembrance, and shapes the transmission of historical narratives across generations.
