David Long

Dr. David Long

Dr. David Long is an Assistant Professor in Solar Physics in the School of Physical Sciences at Dublin City University. He is also the Deputy Director of the Centre for Astronomy and Relativity at DCU.

He earned a BA Mod. (Physics with Astrophysics) from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) in 2007, before receiving his PhD from TCD in 2012 (having spent a year in Boston at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics from 2010-2011). He then moved to University College London (UCL) in 2011 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. At UCL, he was awarded an Early-Career Leverhulme Fellowship, an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellowship, and became a Lecturer in Solar Physics in 2019. From 2020 until 2022, he was the UK Principle Investigator for the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) onboard the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission. Dr. Long moved to Queens University Belfast in 2023 as an STFC Ernest Rutherford Fellow before starting as an Assitant Professor at DCU in 2024.

Dr. Long's research focusses primarily on the initiation and early evolution of solar eruptive events, primarily using observations in the optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and radio wavelength bands. He is also interested in the evolution of elemental abundance in the solar atmosphere using spectral diagnostics.
